Footage from the Who's 1982 concert at Shea Stadium was also used in the video. Ī promotional video was produced, shot at a rehearsal in Landover, Maryland, during their 1982 US tour. The single in its picture sleeve was finally released in 2017 as part of The Who's The Polydor Singles 1975-2015 box set. The picture sleeve, by Richard Evans, depicted a 1930s Art Deco house in Miami. "Eminence Front" was scheduled to be released as a single in the UK by Polydor Records in 1982 the catalog number was WHO 7 but the single was never released. Additionally, the remix has Townshend's vocals panned centrally rather than hard right in the stereo field. A more linear-sounding remixed version appears on the 1997 re-release of It's Hard (a live version, recorded on the band's final stop on their 1982 tour in Toronto, appears as a bonus track on the re-release). In the originally released version, there is a timing flaw or a syncopation in the first chorus, where Townshend sings "behind an eminence front" at the same time Daltrey sings "it's an eminence front", with Townshend one syllable behind. It's clearly about the absurdity of drug-fueled grandiosity, but whether I was pointing the finger at myself or at the cocaine dealers of Miami Beach is hard to recall. I hesitate to try to explain what it was about. "Eminence Front" was written around a chord progression I discovered on my faithful Yamaha E70 organ. Townshend has introduced the song in live performances with: "This song is about what happens when you take too much white powder it's called 'Eminence Front '". The lyrics describe a party in which people hide from their problems behind a façade. The Who is teasing these people. In the song, Townshend sings about the delusions and drug use of the wealthy and hedonistic. Most rich people can try, but can't buy fame, so they pretend to be famous. Hence, Emminence Front is a Facade of Fame. The second meaning is also with the typical ways of the Hollywood/acting/corporate/religious/political/Luciferian globalist elite, which also ties into the first meaning, and that they show the world, just like the drug cartels/drug users show to people in the first meaning, a facade that is behind a mask to hide the brutal truth of their agenda and how said agenda also, like illicit, illegal, and/or harmful, drug usage, can take a physical and mental toll upon people.Įmminence Front is about a class of people, who with their ability to partake of lifestyle amenities such as speedboat sailing, skiing and partying, pretend to be what The Who really was/is- famous. The first meaning is obviously about the rich and powerful people (think like the Narcos series, as well as several drug kingpin/cartel leader Spanish telenovelas) that are involved in the drug trade that also end up using a lot of drugs, specifically, cocaine, as it was the addictive and harmful drug of choice in the 1980s, and the facade that these drug cartels/drug users had with pushing their product through lavish parties on boats, in mansions, hotels, etc., but, as the song goes forward, as we all know, living that sort of lifestyle does take a physical and mental toll upon people. I believe that this song has two meanings that are very interconnected.
